Tips
Don’t
let the weather keep you from enjoying
winter activities in our fair city!
à
Go
out for short periods of time in the warmest
part of the day. Use caution when the temperature dips to minus 15 degrees
Celsius, even without a wind chill factor.
à
Dress
warmly: Cover head ― most of our body
warmth escapes through our head.
Layer clothing to create air pockets
to keep warm.
Cover hands to keep them from feeling
stiff.
à
Equip
yourself for icy conditions: Invest in
strap-on spikes for your footwear and/or a
cane with a spike to prevent falls.
à
Keep
moving to encourage good circulation, but if
you plan to sit for a short while, bring a
cushion to avoid contact with cold surfaces.
à
Drink
warm beverages, and avoid alcohol since it
reduces the body’s ability to sense when
it is getting cold.
à
Be
wary of early signs of frostbite ―
tingling, numbness and pain.
The skin is white or gray, and hard
to the touch.
Do not rub the area but apply steady
pressure with a warm hand.
