Winter Weather Tips

Weather Tips

Don’t let the weather keep you from enjoying winter activities in our fair city!

à     Go out for short periods of time in the warmest part of the day.  Use caution when the temperature dips to minus 15 degrees Celsius, even without a wind chill factor.

à     Dress warmly: Cover head ― most of our body warmth escapes through our head.  Layer clothing to create air pockets to keep warm.  Cover hands to keep them from feeling stiff.

à      Equip yourself for icy conditions: Invest in strap-on spikes for your footwear and/or a cane with a spike to prevent falls.

à     Keep moving to encourage good circulation, but if you plan to sit for a short while, bring a cushion to avoid contact with cold surfaces.

à     Drink warm beverages, and avoid alcohol since it reduces the body’s ability to sense when it is getting cold.

à     Be wary of early signs of frostbite ― tingling, numbness and pain.  The skin is white or gray, and hard to the touch.  Do not rub the area but apply steady pressure with a warm hand.

Suggestions for Winter Activities:

à     Take a walk in your favorite neighbourhood

à     Admire the seasonal light display along Parliament Hill The illumination ceremony takes place on December 4th starting at 5:45 pm.  The lights remain up until January 11th.  It’s a lovely walk or drive along Wellington Street, depending on the temperature.

à     View the Winterlude ice sculptures at Confederation Park  The Winterlude festival takes place on weekends from February 6th to 22nd.  Call 239-5000 for details.

à     Glide along the Rideau Canal  For former skaters, consider having friends or family pull or push a sled which can be rented near the NAC, Fifth Ave. or Dow’s Lake.  Dow’s Lake has a ramp for wheelchair access.  Call 239-5000 for details.

à     Cross country ski in the Greenbelts  Shirley’s Bay in the west end (not groomed) or Green’s Creek & Mer Bleu in the east end (groomed).  Call 239-5000 for details.

à     Visit the Central Experimental Farm where you can see the animals in the barns or the tropical gardens.  Call Agriculture Canada at 759-1000 or the Friends of the Central Experimental Farm at 230-3276 for details.

à     Build a Snowman  Find an energetic person ― neighbour, grandchild, niece or nephew, to be part of your snowman building team.  Remember to enjoy the simple pleasures that winter in Canada can give us.
