25th Anniversary Countdown!

Shyam Khubchandani's Poem

Parkinson's Delight

Parkinson’s caught  me off -balance
Fretting over my movements slowing
Shuffling gait leading me askance
And my legs occasionally shaking
Not knowing what was going on
Doctor’s diagnosis was shocking
Brain’s ability to produce dopamine gone
Its commands, muscles were mocking
After denial, anger, grief and despair
Could come dawn of a new age
Letting Spirit take on body’s care
With compassion, faith and courage
What a mystery to witness
Fingers trembling, arms twitching
Without any intent or finesse
And then on their own stopping

One’s face may appear as a mask
Inside, one may yet smile
Stiff muscles refusing their task
Ceasing to move once in a while
Unpredictable cycles of “on-off”
“On” feels miraculously great
When “off”, one may as well laugh
And for the coming of “on” lay bait

Let Parkinson’s be a welcome guest
Come to heal one’s Spirit and savor the best

-  Shyam, Ottawa, July 15th, 2002
