25th Anniversary Countdown!

Week 5 - July 14th, 2003

Tips for Staying Cool in the Warm Weather

HOT WEATHER TIPS

  • Drink plenty of cool fluids regularly

Even if you do not feel thirsty.  Carry a bottle of water with you if you are able.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine

They can cause your body to become dehydrated.

  • Eat light meals more frequently

Avoid hard-to-digest rich foods and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupe, watermelon and cucumber.

  • Plan your day

Avoid unnecessary activities during the hottest part of the day, especially between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.

  • Dress for the occasion

Wear light coloured, lightweight and loose fitting clothing, sunscreen of at least a 15 SPF, sunglasses with UV protection and a broad-brimmed hat.

  • Know your medication

Heat may affect your response to certain medications.  If you are traveling with your medications, keep them as cool as possible.  Don’t leave them in the car, especially not in the glove box!

  • Take advantage of air-conditioned areas

Window shop at the mall, visit a museum or go to the movies.

  • Stay in a well-ventilated area

Circulated air helps you keep cool. Keep the curtains closed, the windows slightly open and go to the lowest floor.

  • Make your own air-conditioner

Fill an old pop bottle with water, freeze it and put it in front of a fan to keep you cool.

  • Use a buddy system

Check up on a friend or neighbour and have him or her check up on you at least once a day.

  • Take it easy

Soak your feet in a tub of cool water or try rubbing ice on your wrists.  Rest in the shade and avoid rushing around to do things.
