If you've just been told that you have Parkinson's disease, the shock of such news can be overwhelming. It can make you feel lost and very lonely. While it is perfectly natural to feel that way, we want you to know that you are not alone.
Whether you've just been diagnosed, or you've known for some time, there are two things you should do.
You should visit your doctor again
and ask all the questions you may have about your condition. Even if your doctor gave you all the information during your last visit, do not be embarrassed if you've forgotten anything. Your doctor understands and wants to make sure you have all the information you need.
Contact us. At
Parkinson Society Ottawa, we are dedicated to helping you and your family cope with Parkinson's. In cooperation with your family doctor and neurologist, our mission is to provide information and services that will help you maintain the quality of your life.
We have an extensive Resource Library that may help you better understand and cope with the difficulties facing you and your family. You may want to begin by reading Parkinson's: One step at a time. Written by Drs. J. David Grimes and David A. Grimes, both of the Ottawa Hospital, it provides a wonderful overview and is an excellent source of tips for everyday living for people with Parkinson's and their friends and families.
Our support services include specialized physiotherapy, Tai Chi
and Speech Therapy classes to help you maintain your flexibility and strength. Counselling and peer-group support sessions will improve your understanding of the psychological aspects of your disease and allow you to deal with the challenges it presents. It's a good place to make friends with people in similar circumstances.
If you wish to help others participate in our special events, the Society has many volunteering opportunities.
